The Boston Red Sox reportedly offered All-Star left-handed reliever Tanner Scott a contract exceeding the Los Angeles Dodgers’ winning bid. Scott, who has been one of baseball’s best relievers over the past two seasons with a 2.04 ERA in 150 innings pitched since the start of 2023, signed a four-year, $72 million contract with the Dodgers. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Red Sox proposed a longer deal with a higher average annual value, potentially totaling over $90 million. However, Rob Bradford of WEEI disputed this, citing a source who claimed Nightengale’s statement was inaccurate.
This situation mirrors past instances where the Red Sox have been outbid or declined to meet players’ market demands. For example, former Red Sox executive Zack Scott revealed that the team traded Mookie Betts because they decided in 2019 not to offer mega-contracts, a policy they have since reconsidered.
Despite missing out on Scott, the Red Sox have had a successful season and are positioned in the third AL wild card spot. They are expected to continue seeking top relievers to bolster their bullpen, with options like Kirby Yates, Carlos Estévez, and David Robertson potentially on their radar.
