Sandoval’s addition aligns with the Red Sox’s recent emphasis on acquiring left-handed pitchers. This strategy has seen the team sign relievers Justin Wilson and Aroldis Chapman, and engage in significant trades, including acquiring Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox. Sandoval, who has a career 4.01 ERA and 529 strikeouts over 536 innings, is known for his effective changeup and diverse pitch repertoire.
In the outfield, the Red Sox have been linked to high-profile players. Reports from November 2024 suggested that Boston was in discussions to sign free-agent outfielder Juan Soto to a long-term contract, with figures ranging from a 12-year deal at approximately $50 million per season to a 13-year, $625 million offer. These reports, while generating significant buzz, were met with caution from other insiders, indicating that no official agreement had been finalized at that time.
Additionally, the Red Sox have a history of signing outfielders to multi-year deals. In December 2015, they signed veteran outfielder Chris Young to a two-year, $13 million contract. Young was brought in to provide depth and experience, particularly excelling against left-handed pitching.
