The Toronto Blue Jays have made a significant addition to their bullpen by signing right-handed reliever Jeff Hoffman to a three-year contract valued at $33 million, with potential incentives increasing the total to $39 million.
Hoffman, aged 32, had a standout season with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2024, achieving a 2.17 ERA, securing 10 saves, and recording 89 strikeouts over 66⅓ innings, which earned him his first All-Star selection.
Originally drafted by the Blue Jays in 2014, Hoffman’s career has come full circle with this signing. After being traded to the Colorado Rockies, he also played for the Cincinnati Reds before revitalizing his career with the Phillies over the past two seasons, during which he maintained a 2.28 ERA.
The Blue Jays’ bullpen has undergone notable changes recently. Former closer Jordan Romano departed to the Phillies, and Chad Green, who assumed the closer role thereafter, is now succeeded by Hoffman. This strategic move aims to enhance the Blue Jays’ late-inning pitching strength.
Hoffman’s agreement with the Blue Jays follows a previously unsuccessful $40 million deal with the Baltimore Orioles, which fell through due to concerns arising from his physical examination. The Blue Jays, however, proceeded with the signing, confident in Hoffman’s abilities to contribute significantly to their bullpen.
In conjunction with Hoffman’s signing, the Blue Jays designated right-hander Brett de Geus for assignment to make room on the roster.
This acquisition reflects the Blue Jays’ commitment to strengthening their pitching staff as they prepare for the upcoming season, aiming to build upon their previous performances and contend more effectively in the competitive American League East division.
