The New York Yankees are actively seeking to trade starting pitcher Marcus Stroman, who is under a two-year, $37 million contract, in an effort to reallocate financial resources and enhance their roster for the upcoming season.
Stroman, who joined the Yankees prior to the 2024 season, had an underwhelming performance last year, posting a 4.31 ERA over 154.2 innings. His struggles, particularly in the second half where he recorded a 5.98 ERA, have led the Yankees to consider moving him to free up payroll space. Additionally, his contract includes a player option for 2026 that vests if he pitches 140 innings in 2025, a scenario the Yankees are keen to avoid.
One potential trade scenario involves sending Stroman back to the Toronto Blue Jays, the team with which he began his Major League career. A proposed deal suggests the Yankees could receive second baseman Davis Schneider in exchange for Stroman and first baseman/catcher Ben Rice.
Another possibility includes trading Stroman to a National League West team, such as the San Francisco Giants or the San Diego Padres, both of which are seeking to bolster their starting rotations. The Yankees’ willingness to absorb a portion of Stroman’s salary could make such a deal more attractive to potential trade partners.
By offloading Stroman’s contract, the Yankees aim to create financial flexibility to pursue other roster enhancements, particularly in the infield. They have been linked to several infielders, including Jorge Polanco and Luis Arraez, as they seek to strengthen their lineup for the 2025 season.
