The New York Yankees, fresh off their first World Series appearance since 2009, are actively working to strengthen their roster under general manager Brian Cashman. After losing outfielder Juan Soto to free agency, the Yankees are reportedly eyeing Chicago Cubs infielder Nico Hoerner as a potential target to fill a key gap in their infield.
The Yankees’ need for a reliable second baseman became evident after Gleyber Torres signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Detroit Tigers, leaving a void on the right side of the infield. If Jazz Chisholm Jr. remains at third base, the team will need to address the keystone position before the season begins. Hoerner, known for his consistent defense and offensive contributions, has been linked to the Yankees in recent trade rumors.
A proposed deal, outlined by Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer, suggests the Yankees could acquire Hoerner in exchange for right-handed pitcher Marcus Stroman, infielder Oswaldo Cabrera, shortstop prospect Roderick Arias, and cash. While this hypothetical trade seems promising for the Yankees, it raises questions from the Cubs’ perspective. Hoerner’s departure would create an infield downgrade, with Cabrera stepping in as his potential replacement. However, adding Stroman to a rotation featuring Shōta Imanaga, Justin Steele, Jameson Taillon, and Matthew Boyd could significantly boost the Cubs’ chances of reclaiming the NL Central title.
While the trade remains speculative, it underscores Cashman’s commitment to addressing the Yankees’ needs and enhancing their competitiveness for the upcoming season. Fans and analysts will closely watch as the offseason continues to unfold.
