The New York Yankees have been active in reshaping their roster after losing Juan Soto to the New York Mets and seeing Gleyber Torres sign with the Detroit Tigers. With a hole to fill in the infield for the 2025 season, general manager Brian Cashman is reportedly targeting another key piece. Ha-Seong Kim, the versatile infielder and Gold Glove Award winner, has been linked to the Yankees multiple times throughout the offseason, though he remains on the open market.
Kim’s ability to play second base, shortstop, and third base offers the Yankees significant flexibility in constructing their infield alignment. His defensive prowess would complement the Yankees’ lineup, providing stability across multiple positions. However, the competition for Kim’s services is heating up, with other teams potentially swooping in to secure his talents.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic suggests that the San Diego Padres could be Kim’s most likely destination, projecting the Padres as a perfect fit for him at shortstop, allowing Xander Bogaerts to shift to second base. Bowden also notes that while the San Francisco Giants initially showed interest, they pivoted after signing Willy Adames, and the Boston Red Sox could be another potential suitor, keeping Trevor Story at second base and giving top prospects like Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell more time to develop at Triple-A.
Kim’s time on the market has been affected by a season-ending shoulder surgery, which has likely decreased his value. Before the 2024 season, projections for Kim were as high as a four-year, $72 million deal, but that estimate has since dropped to a two-year, $36 million contract.
