Brian Kelly and LSU Football Continue Pursuit of Defensive Back Talent
Brian Kelly and the LSU football staff are focused on strengthening the Tigers’ secondary, with plans to host a key target. While several newcomers are competing for cornerback spots, the safety position remains critically thin.
This offseason, LSU has addressed defensive needs by securing commitments from edge rushers, cornerbacks, and an SEC defensive lineman. However, the safety position still requires more depth and competition as the team heads into spring camp in March. The current safety group includes Javien Toviano, Jardin Gilbert, Dashawn Spears, and Austin Ausberry.
LSU has recently been linked to Auburn defensive back Keionte Scott, and now another name has surfaced: North Carolina State’s Tamarcus Cooley.

The Visitor: Tamarcus Cooley, North Carolina State
Tamarcus Cooley, the highest-rated defensive player on North Carolina State’s roster for 2024, has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal and is on LSU’s radar. Cooley made a strong impression during his standout season with the Wolfpack, recording 30 tackles, nine pass breakups, three interceptions, and two forced fumbles.
North Carolina State head coach Dave Doeren praised Cooley’s performance: “He played really well in a lot of ways… In the box, setting edges, fitting in the run. Then in coverage, he had pass breakups and a big interception. For a young guy to manage all that, it was impressive.”
At 6 feet tall and 200 pounds, Cooley is well-suited for a defensive back role. As a redshirt-freshman, he will have multiple years of eligibility at his next stop. LSU is set to host Cooley for a visit on Thursday, according to 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz.
