contract confirmed::Yankees have finally Agree the Contract to Bring Back ‘Bronx Legend’ Infielder….

Andrew Velazquez, affectionately known as “Squid,” has rejoined the New York Yankees on a minor league contract that includes an invitation to spring training. This marks a return to the Bronx for the Bronx native and Fordham Preparatory School alumnus, who previously played for the Yankees in 2021.

Velazquez’s initial stint with the Yankees was brief but impactful. After debuting in August 2021, he filled in for the injured Gleyber Torres, playing 28 games and starting in the season-ending loss to the Red Sox. During this period, he became a fan favorite, notably hitting his first home run at Yankee Stadium on August 21, 2021, in front of his parents. His defensive prowess at shortstop further endeared him to the team’s supporters.

Following his tenure with the Yankees, Velazquez played for the Los Angeles Angels in 2022, where he appeared in 125 games but struggled offensively, batting .196. In 2024, he spent the season with the Gwinnett Stripers, the Atlanta Braves’ Triple-A affiliate, continuing to develop his skills.

Velazquez’s return to the Yankees provides valuable infield depth, especially after Gleyber Torres departed for the Detroit Tigers. While he may not reclaim his previous role at shortstop due to the emergence of Anthony Volpe, Velazquez’s versatility and experience make him a valuable asset to the team. His familiarity with the organization and the city of New York is expected to contribute positively to the Yankees’ roster dynamics in the upcoming season.
