Yankees Set to Lose Another Superstar Free Agent to Mets in 2024.

One could argue that the Roki Sasaki sweepstakes might be even more significant than the Juan Soto sweepstakes. While Soto ultimately chose the New York Mets over the New York Yankees in a surprising move, money played a big role in his decision.

Unlike Soto, however, there is little the Mets or Yankees can do regarding Sasaki’s future. Due to international signing rules, Sasaki can only sign for up to $7.5 million, meaning the Yankees can’t offer him a $400 million deal and secure his commitment.

Sasaki’s decision is expected to happen between January 15, when the new international signing period opens, and January 23, when his window closes. While it’s unclear where he will sign, Pete Caldera has predicted the Mets will win the sweepstakes once again, edging out the Yankees for the second time this winter.

“Once again defeated by their crosstown rivals this winter, the Yankees are left stunned as Japanese ace Roki Sasaki, 23, opts for the Mets,” Caldera wrote on January 2.

Roki Sasaki’s free agency is unique, and it could benefit or challenge the New York Yankees. Unlike typical free agents, Sasaki values long-term development over money. His agent, Joel Wolfe, explained that Sasaki is looking for a team that can help him improve, with a global view on his career. Sasaki isn’t focused on having Japanese teammates, which broadens his options. The Yankees have an advantage with pitching coach Matt Blake, but competition is fierce. Reports indicate that teams like the Dodgers, Padres, and Mets have also met with Sasaki, making it uncertain where he’ll land.
