LSU Football Dominates the 2025 Transfer Portal, Enhancing Their Roster with Top Talent

LSU football has made a significant mark in the 2025 transfer portal cycle, positioning itself as the top winner with key acquisitions that address major roster needs. While other teams are also making their case, LSU stands out with its strategic moves under head coach Brian Kelly’s leadership. By filling specific gaps, particularly on defense and offense, the Tigers have strengthened their team across multiple positions.

A primary concern for LSU was replacing key contributors from its dominant pass rush unit, which ranked No. 1 nationally in pressure rate. To address this, LSU added top-tier edge rushers, including Patrick Payton, the No. 1 edge rusher in the portal, Jack Pyburn, and Jimari Butler, a former Nebraska player with 16 TFLs in the last two seasons. These additions should significantly boost LSU’s defensive line, which relies heavily on strong edge rushers.

Additionally, LSU focused on bolstering their secondary, adding the No. 2 cornerback, Mansoor Delane, and the No. 8 cornerback, Ja’Keem Jackson. These key signings will enhance their pass defense, which had been a weakness. LSU also addressed the offense, particularly the receiving corps. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who lost top targets Kyren Lacy and CJ Daniels, gained two talented wide receivers: Nic Anderson (No. 5) and Barion Brown (No. 8), adding much-needed depth and playmaking ability.

To improve the running game, LSU secured two of the best interior linemen and run blockers in the portal, Braelin Moore and Josh Thompson, which should improve their offensive line and ground game.

Although LSU has made significant progress, they still aim to add an interior defender and potentially a safety. Despite these remaining needs, LSU’s offseason moves have been impressive, particularly after an 8-4 season and the loss of Bryce Underwood. As 247Sports analyst Cooper Petagna stated, the team’s strategic use of the portal’s “redistribution of wealth” has been crucial to their success.
