Sony Pictures Classics (SPC) has announced the nationwide release of “Becoming Led Zeppelin,” a documentary directed by Bernard MacMahon, scheduled for February 14, 2025. This film, the first officially sanctioned by the surviving members of Led Zeppelin, delves into the band’s creative, musical, and personal origins, offering an intimate portrayal from their perspective.

Prior to the general release, the documentary will have an exclusive IMAX debut on February 7, 2025, across nearly 200 theaters, providing audiences with an immersive viewing experience. Additionally, early access screenings are planned for February 5 in 18 select markets, allowing dedicated fans an opportunity to engage with the film ahead of its broader release.

“Becoming Led Zeppelin” is a hybrid docu-concert film that explores the band’s rapid ascent to fame, highlighting their creative processes and personal journeys. The documentary features a wealth of rare and previously unseen performance footage, transporting viewers to the concert halls of Led Zeppelin’s early tours. This archival material is complemented by exclusive commentary from the band members themselves, including a never-before-heard interview with the late drummer John Bonham, offering a comprehensive insight into the band’s dynamics and evolution.

The film’s production involved extensive research and restoration efforts. Writer-producer Allison McGourty noted that the team spent five years searching for rare and unseen film footage, photographs, and music recordings. These materials were meticulously transferred using custom techniques to ensure they meet the high-quality standards of IMAX presentation, enhancing the documentary’s immersive quality.

“Becoming Led Zeppelin” is produced by McGourty through Paradise Pictures in association with Big Beach. The executive production team includes Michael B. Clark, Alex Turtletaub, Cynthia Heusing, David Kistenbroker, Duke Erikson, Simon Moran, and Ged Doherty.

This documentary represents a significant addition to the legacy of Led Zeppelin, providing both longtime fans and new audiences with an unprecedented look into the band’s history. The combination of rare archival footage, personal interviews, and high-quality production aims to deliver a compelling narrative of one of rock music’s most influential groups.
