Ole Miss football entered fall camp in a better situation than most programs around the country when it came to their quarterback room. Not only is the arm talent through the roof within the unit, the Rebels have had their unquestioned starter behind center ever since he announced he’d be returning for his ‘Last Dance’ season.
Senior quarterback Jaxson Dart is in his third season as Ole Miss’ starting signal-caller and is already an early top-five Heisman Trophy candidate. This offseason has only marked the second of the Lane Kiffin era in which there was no starting quarterback controversy.
That being said, ever since Dart announced his return, all eyes immediately went to the competitive backup quarterback slot. Previous 2023 transfer Spencer Sanders was Dart’s backup throughout his final collegiate season, leaving a wide open gap for either sophomore Walker Howard or redshirt freshman Austin Simmons to step into this season. The two have been battling it out since spring and still are about three weeks into fall camp.
