Former NASCAR driver and champion Kurt Busch was arrested for driving while impaired in Iredell County, North Carolina, on Tuesday night, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
NCSHP states that around 11:40 p.m. they were called to assist the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office with a traffic stop at the intersection of Brawley School Road and Chuckwood Road.
Officials state that Busch was stopped for speeding, going 63 mph in a 45 mph zone, reckless driving and was suspected of being impaired.
A trooper arrived at the scene and performed a roadside field sobriety test which determined the driver to be impaired by alcohol.
Busch was placed under arrest and transported to the Iredell County Jail where he submitted to a breath test which registered a .17 breath alcohol concentration. He was taken before a magistrate and provided a written promise to appear in court.
He was charged by the NCSHP with driving while impaired.
Additional charges of speeding and reckless driving were handled by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
His initial court date is scheduled for September 19 in Mooresville.
Busch was the 2004 NASCAR Cup Series champion and winner of the 2017 Daytona 500. He last competed full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2022.
