Ahead of today’s game against the Washington Nationals, the Braves have made another roster adjustment by recalling right-hander Daysbel Hernandez and placing right-hander Jimmy Herget on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation. The Braves have been making numerous roster changes recently as they strive to maintain a healthy bullpen going into the summer.
Hernandez, who last appeared in Atlanta in late May as the 27th man during a doubleheader against the Padres, has been impressive in his 19.2 innings with Gwinnett this season. He boasts a 2.29 ERA with 27 strikeouts and 11 walks. His return to the Braves comes as the team continues to shuffle its bullpen to address injuries and maintain effectiveness.
Herget’s placement on the injured list adds to the Braves’ bullpen woes, joining left-handers A.J. Minter and Tyler Matzek among the current injured relievers. Meanwhile, the big news out of Washington today is the sighting of top prospect and 2023 first-round pick Hurston Waldrep. Although an official roster move has not been announced, Waldrep is expected to start the series finale on Sunday, according to Braves’ beat writer Mark Bowman.
It’s likely that Hernandez will see action today and then be promptly sent back to Gwinnett after the game to make room for Waldrep on the big league roster. Another possibility is that Spencer Schwellenbach could be sent down instead, though this seems less likely.
The Braves are focused on giving their top starters—Max Fried, Chris Sale, Reynaldo Lopez, and Charlie Morton—extra days of rest. This strategy is logical considering Morton’s age, Lopez’s recent transition from being a reliever, and the injury histories of Fried and Sale. Once the official roster move is announced, updates will be provided on the site, so stay tuned.
