Reading significantly reduced their concerns about relegation from the Sky Bet League One with a crucial 1-0 triumph at home against mid-table Northampton.
Despite a dominant first half from the Cobblers, Reading managed to stay competitive largely due to the exceptional saves made by goalkeeper Joel Pereira.
However, the tide turned in the 65th minute when substitute Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan made a decisive impact, securing the victory for Reading by scoring from a tight angle after a skillful run from the left flank.
Reading, spurred by the recent announcement of owner Dai Yongge’s agreement on “exclusivity” terms with an undisclosed potential buyer for the club, struggled to make an impact in a lackluster first half.
Despite the promising news, Reading failed to create significant opportunities in the initial period. Players such as Ben Elliott, Harvey Knibbs, and Sam Smith missed several half-chances, allowing Northampton to dominate the latter part of the half. Joel Pereira, Reading’s goalkeeper, showcased his prowess with a series of remarkable saves to keep his team in contention.
Pereira’s notable performance included a crucial double save to thwart Northampton’s top scorer, Sam Hoskins, who had already netted 15 goals. Additionally, Pereira made impressive stops against Ben Fox and Louis Appere, denying Northampton from taking the lead with their firm efforts on goal.
