The Green Bay Packers have consistently strengthened their defense over the years, but a trade for Pro Bowl defensive lineman Jonathan Allen could add another seasoned veteran to their roster.
During a Bleacher Report live stream, Pack-A-Day’s Andy Herman suggested several potential trades for the Packers before training camp, including a notable proposal for acquiring Allen.
Herman proposed that acquiring Allen would likely be an in-season trade, driven by the potential for injuries. A season-ending injury to key players like Kenny Clark or Devonte Wyatt could prompt the Packers to pursue a veteran addition to bolster their defensive line.
While Herman didn’t think that it was likely the Packers took a swing on a player in the offseason, he believes that a splash move could be possible before the 2024 trade deadline.
Nearly a decade after an impressive college career, Allen is now in the prime of his NFL journey.
As a high school standout, Allen garnered All-American honors and was rated as a 5-star recruit. Despite having numerous options, he chose to join Nick Saban’s program at Alabama. During his tenure with the Crimson Tide, Allen achieved remarkable success, including winning a national championship, earning unanimous All-American recognition, securing three first-team All-SEC honors, and being honored with the Chuck Bednarik Award for the nation’s top defensive player.
Allen’s impressive college career paved the way for his early selection in the 2017 NFL Draft, where he was chosen by the Washington Commanders (formerly the Redskins) with the 17th overall pick.
Despite facing challenges as a rookie, Allen rapidly evolved into a reliable cornerstone of Washington’s defense. Throughout his eight seasons in the NFL, he has amassed 382 combined tackles and 39 sacks, earning Pro Bowl honors in both 2021 and 2022.
