Former Green Bay Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari, who played just one game in the 2023 season before a knee injury sidelined him, is on schedule to return for the 2024 season, according to NFL Media. The 32-year-old veteran, plagued by injuries in recent years, underwent a follow-up examination with Dr. Brian Cole, chairman of Orthopedics at Rush University Medical Center, confirming his progress.
Bakhtiari announced in October 2023 that he would undergo season-ending surgery to address a cartilage issue in his knee. Since tearing his ACL in December 2020, Bakhtiari has struggled with recovery, resulting in limited appearances: one game in 2021, 11 games in 2022, and only one game in 2023. Despite these setbacks, his performance when healthy has been impressive, earning him five All-Pro selections (three second-team) and three Pro Bowl honors. In his sole 2023 appearance, he did not allow a sack, quarterback hit, or pressure.
Released by the Packers this offseason, Bakhtiari is currently a free agent seeking a new team. If his recovery stays on track, he is expected to be ready for immediate play. The New York Jets are a potential destination, given Bakhtiari’s connection to Aaron Rodgers.
Drafted in the fourth round in 2013, Bakhtiari has spent his entire career with the Packers, starting all 131 games he has played. Wherever he ends up, his new team will benefit from his extensive experience and proven talent as one of the league’s top offensive tackles.
