The Minnesota Vikings have secured former Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones on a one-year contract, as initially disclosed by Dianna Russini. According to Tom Pelissero, Jones will receive $7 million as part of his deal with the Vikings, following his release by their primary rivals just a day prior.
Green Bay opted to sign Josh Jacobs on Monday, prompting the swift decision to part ways with Jones after he declined a significant salary reduction request. Assuming he remains healthy, Jones will now have the opportunity to face his former team twice during the 2024 season.
Despite approaching 30 years old in December, Jones demonstrated his enduring ability towards the end of last season. He notably amassed over 100 rushing yards in each of the Packers’ final five games, including their playoff matchups against the Cowboys and 49ers. Notably, Jones secured three touchdowns during the wild card round victory in Dallas.
Originally selected in the fifth round from UTEP in 2017, Jones accumulated close to 6,000 rushing yards at an impressive average of five yards per carry over his seven seasons with the Packers. Additionally, he tallied over 2,000 receiving yards and a total of 63 touchdowns during this tenure, boasting a league-leading 19 touchdowns in 2019. Known for his efficiency and explosiveness in the outside zone game, Jones also adds value as a receiving threat out of the backfield.
