The Green Bay Packers maintain some available salary cap space and are considering veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill as a potential free agent acquisition before training camp commences.
Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report suggests several free agents the Packers could pursue, including experienced Pro Bowl offensive tackle D.J. Humphries. Ballentine argues for Tannehill’s appeal, noting that while his days as a starter may be behind him, he still possesses the skills to serve as a dependable veteran backup for the Packers, capitalizing on the team’s surrounding talent to win games when needed.
Despite Tannehill’s previous hefty $118 million contract with the Tennessee Titans, his current free agency status suggests he may be seeking a more modest deal. Although many teams have secured veteran backup quarterbacks during the offseason, Tannehill remains without a contract offer, perhaps due to his fluctuating fortunes over recent years.
Tannehill’s career trajectory shifted significantly after leaving the Miami Dolphins for the Titans, where he excelled, earning accolades such as Comeback Player of the Year and Pro Bowl honors in 2019. However, his tenure with the Titans eventually soured, leading to his current free agent status.
While Jordan Love is firmly established as the Packers’ franchise quarterback, uncertainty looms over the backup position. Incumbent backup Sean Clifford lacks certain attributes to be a reliable option if needed, and rookie Michael Pratt, while promising, may not yet be deemed ready. Hence, Tannehill emerges as a viable option to bolster the Packers’ quarterback depth and provide valuable experience and stability in case of unforeseen circumstances.
