WNBA Draft Day: let’s take a look at who the New York Liberty may have eyes on….

The top of the 2024 WNBA Draft is devoid of any excitement or uncertainty as the event approaches Monday night at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music). It’s widely anticipated that Caitlin Clark will be selected as the No. 1 pick by the Indiana Fever, barring any unforeseen circumstances like a meteor striking Fort Greene before Commissioner Cathy Englebert finishes her sentence. Similarly, Stanford’s Cameron Brink is considered almost as much of a lock to go as the No. 2 pick to the Los Angeles Sparks.

However, once these predictable picks are made, the draft is expected to become more chaotic and entertaining. The New York Liberty, positioned at No. 11, along with additional picks at No. 17, No. 23, and No. 35 (courtesy of a 2023 trade with the Chicago Sky), may have to exercise patience as they await their turn. General Manager Jonathan Kolb, known for his willingness to make trades, faces the challenge of managing a roster geared for immediate success.

Despite having made significant roster moves in the past, including contract extensions and securing key players, the Liberty view the draft as an opportunity to further enhance their talent pool. One hopeful prospect for the first round is Angel Reese, a former LSU star, who has garnered attention from Liberty fans after being spotted at a recent basketball game in Madison Square Garden. However, it’s uncertain if Reese will fall to the Liberty’s pick at No. 11, but Kolb may consider trading up if she lands within reach at No. 9 or 10.

Additionally, the draft is notable for its international talent, an area the Liberty have historically embraced. Players like Carla Leite and Leila Lacan, young guards from France, present intriguing long-term prospects for Kolb to consider at either pick No. 11 or No. 23, depending on how the draft unfolds.

As the draft day approaches, anticipation builds for the New York Liberty and their fans, eager to see how the team will further strengthen its roster. With multiple picks and various talented prospects available, the Liberty have the opportunity to make impactful decisions that could shape the team’s future success in the WNBA.
