Angel Reese’s first appearance for the Chicago Sky garnered over 545,000 live-stream views following an initial mistake by the WNBA.
During the Sky’s preseason matchup against the Minnesota Lynx, the WNBA’s streaming app failed to broadcast the game as promised, despite listing all preseason games as available for viewing on the app. Luckily, a fan stepped in and initiated a live stream from their cell phone while attending the game in Minneapolis.
The stream quickly gained traction, accumulating more than 545,000 views by Sunday morning, with the original post receiving 2.4 million views. The streamer, @heyheyitsalli, posted updates on the viewership numbers, revealing that there were 173,381 live viewers at one point during the game.
The WNBA issued an apology for the error, clarifying that only Caitlin Clark’s debut with the Indiana Fever was scheduled to be streamed. Despite the mishap, the stream attracted attention from both inside and outside the league, with prominent figures like four-time WNBA champion Sue Bird expressing amazement at the viewership numbers.
Angel Reese, selected seventh overall by the Sky in the 2024 WNBA Draft, made an impressive debut, scoring 13 points on 2-of-7 shooting in Chicago’s 92-81 loss to the Lynx. Additionally, former South Carolina standout Kamilla Cardoso, drafted third overall, contributed six points on 3-of-5 shooting in her debut for the Sky.
