DONE DEAL : Northern Illinois signed agreement with the…….

James Ester, a defensive tackle hailing from Detroit and a former player at Michigan’s renowned Cass Tech High School, is set to embark on his professional journey with the Green Bay Packers, marking the beginning of his professional football career in Northern Illinois.

James Ester, a standout from Northern Illinois, showcased his prowess on the football field over five years. Beginning as a true freshman in 2019, he quickly ascended to a starting role by the 2020 season, demonstrating his reliability with 43 starts out of 49 appearances. Throughout his tenure, Ester compiled impressive stats, including 121 tackles, 20 tackles-for-loss, nine sacks, and various defensive contributions like interceptions and passes defensed.

Earning the distinction of team captain for his final three seasons underscored his leadership and the trust he garnered from both coaches and teammates. His peak performance came in his senior year (2023), marked by notable increases in tackles and sacks, earning him recognition as a second-team all-MAC player.

Despite being undersized compared to some counterparts, Ester’s blend of size and productivity attracted significant interest from NFL teams, especially in a draft class lacking depth in his position. His versatile background, having played both defensive line and linebacker in high school, adds further intrigue to his potential.

While his size might raise questions, Ester’s experience and skill set position him well for a role in the professional arena, likely starting with contributions in special teams and situational play. With the capacity to excel as a rotational defensive tackle, particularly in run-stopping schemes, Ester’s journey into the NFL promises to be one of perseverance and potential impact.
