The Packers have inked deals with two exclusive rights free agents for the 2024 season.
According to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, the Green Bay Packers made it official by signing two out of their three exclusive rights free agents, namely running back Emanuel Wilson and punter Daniel Whelan, during the team’s organized team activities kickoff.
Typically, the Packers hold off on signing these exclusive rights free agents until they physically arrive in Green Bay.
Exclusive rights free agents are players who haven’t yet completed three NFL seasons and find themselves without contracts.
These players usually either climbed up from practice squads as undrafted free agents or were picked up from spring football leagues.
Through the ERFA process, the Packers are able to extend tenders to these players, which essentially obligates them to sign if they wish to continue their NFL careers, locking them into aone-year contract at a relatively low cost.
What Will The Packers Do At Left Tackle?
Asked if Walker was the left tackle of the future based on his performance last year, Packers coach Matt LaFleur responded: “Well, he was our left tackle last year.” before adding, “I think so.”
There is still a question as to whether Walker’s run began out of necessity or if he will be there long-term:
“I thought he had a really good year,” LaFleur said. “I think there’s a lot of room for improvement just in terms of from a consistency standpoint, you know, playing 70 plays at a high level. We’ve seen some great flashes from him. He’s certainly athletic enough to do it. So it’s going to be a big offseason for him, but he’s a guy that we’re certainly confident in.”
The Packers have 11 draft picks this year, including five in the first three rounds. It won’t be surprising if the Packers choose to use one of those premium picks on the offensive line, specifically at tackle.
