According to a recent suggestion by Bleacher Report, the Cowboys could potentially deepen their roster by trading backup quarterback Trey Lance to the Green Bay Packers. Despite Lance not seeing any action in 2023, the proposed deal would fetch the Cowboys the 126th pick in the draft, which is the Packers’ fourth-round selection.
However, such a move would seem peculiar for the Cowboys, especially amidst ongoing contract negotiations with their star quarterback, Dak Prescott. With no progress on a new deal, Prescott is set to enter the 2024 season with a hefty $59 million salary and just one year remaining on his contract.
Although the situation seems unsustainable, it appears that the Cowboys may be inclined to let Prescott prove his worth throughout the upcoming season and potentially into the playoffs before committing to a long-term agreement. In this context, Lance serves as their lone bargaining chip, offering a fallback option should Prescott hit free agency next year.
The current scenario presents a challenging predicament for the Cowboys, with Dak Prescott’s contract situation unresolved. There’s a distinct possibility that the team wants Prescott to demonstrate his ability to lead them effectively through the regular season and deep into the playoffs before committing to a new long-term deal. Trey Lance represents their only leverage in this scenario, serving as a contingency plan should Prescott enter free agency next year.
Considering this context, trading Lance doesn’t appear to be a feasible option for the Cowboys, particularly until Prescott’s contract situation is resolved. Lance, who was the third overall pick by the 49ers in the 2021 draft, currently stands as the Cowboys’ backup plan at quarterback.
