The Green Bay Packers have seen the departure of numerous All-Pro players over the years. Most recently, within the past three years, the Packers have bid farewell to Aaron Rodgers (five-time All-Pro), David Bakhtiari (six-time All-Pro), and Davante Adams (three-time All-Pro), indicating a shift towards a younger roster for the team.
Nevertheless, there is speculation that the Packers might consider bringing back a former All-Pro player for the 2024 season.
Tyler Brooke, from Heavy on Sports, has outlined the possibility of the Packers reuniting with All-Pro safety Micah Hyde. With limited options available outside of free agency, the team could explore the prospect of bringing back Hyde rather than solely relying on potential draft picks for a starting safety position in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Hyde, initially drafted by the Packers in the fifth round in 2013, spent four seasons in Green Bay before achieving All-Pro recognition twice and earning a Pro Bowl selection with the Buffalo Bills.
While rumors of mutual interest between Hyde and the Packers remain unconfirmed, sources like TSWN with USA Today have identified Green Bay as a top destination for the 33-year-old safety. Although a long-term agreement between the two parties seems unlikely, a short-term deal for Hyde to return to Green Bay could be a plausible move in 2024.
The Packers are poised for significant defensive changes in the upcoming season. The dismissal of former defensive coordinator Joe Barry has paved the way for former Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley to assume the role. Hafley’s defensive scheme emphasizes single-high safety formations, particularly utilizing Cover 1 and Cover 3 coverages in the secondary. This approach underscores the importance of safety performance, requiring safeties to effectively cover various roles, including slot/box responsibilities and patrolling the back end of the defense sideline-to-sideline.
