The Green Bay Packers have been highly active in the free-agent market this season, making significant additions like RB Josh Jacobs and safety Xavier McKinney while also ensuring the retention of key team members. Among those retained is Corey Ballentine, who surprised some with the amount he received in his new contract.

According to reports, Green Bay and Ballentine reached an agreement on a one-year deal worth $16 million, which includes a $500,000 signing bonus. This represents a substantial investment for a backup player, but Ballentine’s performance has evidently impressed the Packers’ management.

Ballentine, known for his impact on special teams, has consistently demonstrated his determined energy and versatility. Additionally, when called upon to play cornerback, the 27-year-old has risen to the occasion. With his agility and adeptness in aerial plays, he contributed significantly during the 2023 season, amassing 43 total tackles, seven pass deflections, and one interception in 14 games.

As Ballentine rejoins the team, he adds depth to a secondary that boasts talents like Jaire Alexander, Keisean Nixon, and Eric Stokes as likely starters. His ability to fill in effectively during injuries further enhances the team’s defensive options.

With the offseason presenting crucial opportunities for team development, the Packers aim to make strategic moves to enhance their chances of securing the division title. Currently, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, Green Bay holds the second-best odds at +210 to win the NFC North in 2024.
