DONE DEAL: Former Green Bay Packer Free Agent Agrees to a Fresh Deal…

The Green Bay Packers have faced a tough decision this off-season as they opted to part ways with their veteran left tackle, David Bakhtiari. This marks Bakhtiari’s first foray into free agency in his career. The move was primarily driven by concerns over his health in recent years and his substantial $40 million salary cap impact.

Nevertheless, the start of the 2023 NFL Season demonstrated Bakhtiari’s continued excellence when he is in top form. It’s evident that numerous teams will vie for his services in free agency, but one team stands out for not pursuing him.

Reports indicate that the New York Jets will not pursue Bakhtiari in 2024, primarily due to their acquisition of former Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith. Smith’s signing, reportedly for a one-year deal worth potentially up to $20 million with incentives, signifies a significant upgrade for the Jets’ offensive line.

The Jets’ rapid overhaul of their offensive line, which also includes signings of left guard John Simpson and right tackle Morgan Moses, will provide quarterback Aaron Rodgers, returning from Achilles surgery, with a revamped front line. Notably, Rodgers and Bakhtiari have been longtime teammates and close friends off the field.

Despite expectations that the Jets would target Bakhtiari following his release from the Packers, it’s now apparent that they’ve shifted their focus to Smith. Bakhtiari’s past knee injuries have led to significant missed playing time, stemming from his ACL tear in December 2020, although indications suggest he’s on track to return to play in 2024.

This decision by the Jets has garnered reactions from NFL fans, particularly considering the longstanding partnership between Rodgers and Bakhtiari in Green Bay.
