According to a source informed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Josh Jacobs, now a free agent, has inked a lucrative four-year contract worth $48 million with the Packers. In a corresponding move, Aaron Jones has been notified of his release by the team.
Jacobs’ deal reportedly includes $12.5 million guaranteed. Last season, the 26-year-old declined to sign the $10.091 million franchise tag offered by the Las Vegas Raiders, opting instead to skip their entire offseason program, training camp, and preseason. He eventually agreed to a restructured one-year deal worth $11.791 million but experienced a downturn in performance, registering his lowest statistics in several categories.
On the other hand, Jones, aged 29, has been a consistent performer for the Packers since being drafted by them in 2017, averaging 5.0 yards per carry over 97 games. He has accumulated impressive career rushing yards and touchdowns, along with significant contributions in receiving yards.
The Packers’ general manager had previously stated that Jones would return to the team, but that was before the possibility of acquiring Jacobs arose. However, Jones could still potentially rejoin the Packers if he doesn’t find favorable offers in the market.
Despite Jones’ recent dip in productivity, he finished the season strongly, particularly in the playoffs, showcasing his value to the team. He holds several records and has been a pivotal figure both on and off the field for the Packers.
With Jacobs now joining the Packers, the team looks to him as the new centerpiece of their running game, potentially facing the departure of backup AJ Dillon in free agency.
Jacobs, standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 223 pounds, had a standout season in 2022 but struggled with injuries and inconsistency in the following season. Nonetheless, his overall career statistics place him among the top running backs in the league since 2019, closely trailing Derrick Henry in rushing yards and touchdowns.
