Aaron Jones’ sudden departure from Green Bay after seven seasons came as a surprise when it was announced on Monday. His swift agreement to join the rival Minnesota Vikings the following Tuesday added to the unexpected turn of events.
However, for the 29-year-old running back, who was officially introduced as a Viking alongside Sam Darnold and other newly signed players on Thursday, the move within the same division was purely a business decision.
“It’s not unusual at all. It’s just football,” Jones expressed during his initial press conference with Minnesota. “I’ve played for various teams growing up, from middle school to high school. Changing teams and teammates is part of the game.”
He further explained, “It’s part of the business. You know what you sign up for. My agent had already informed me of the possibility, so mentally, I was prepared. I simply wanted to go where I felt valued. That place is here, and I’m excited to be here.”
Jones, who was released by the Packers on Monday after they reached an agreement with former Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs, acknowledged the financial aspect of the decision. While Jacobs signed for $12 million per year, Jones, who was set to carry a $17.6 million cap hit in 2024, declined a pay cut and was subsequently released.
In Minnesota, he joins the team considered a rival. However, Jones insists there’s no animosity toward Green Bay in his approach to free agency.
“Just because they didn’t re-sign me, it’s not about seeking revenge. My motivation is already high, and it will remain so,” Jones clarified. “I’m on a mission to become the best running back in the NFL, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to prove that here in Minnesota with a great organization.”
Jones signed a $7 million contract for one season with the Vikings, ensuring he will face his former team twice, including a game at Lambeau Field. He downplayed the potential drama of facing the Packers, emphasizing that for him, it’s simply about playing football.
“It’s going to be enjoyable. Just playing ball, you know?” Jones remarked. “I’ve played in intense situations before, but at the end of the day, it’s just football. I’m returning to where I used to play. It’s all about the game. Just go out there and make an impact.”
Despite a somewhat lackluster final season with the Packers due to injury, Jones showcased his prowess in the playoffs, leaving Green Bay with glimpses of his former self.
Reflecting on his sudden shift to Minnesota, Jones stated, “Honestly, I haven’t even looked at their roster since I got released. My focus is solely on the Vikings now. I’m not concerned about the Packers. I’m a Minnesota Viking.”
This sentiment was reinforced by his closing statement during the press conference, where he enthusiastically exclaimed “Skol!”—the Vikings’ rallying cry.
While Jones’ transition to the Vikings may have been surprising to many, he himself wasn’t caught off guard. “I’m never surprised by what happens in the league,” he remarked. “The longer you’re in it, the crazier things you see.”
