Packers awarded three compensatory selections for next month’s NFL Draft.

GREEN BAY, Wisc. — As general manager Brian Gutekunst expected, the Green Bay Packers officially received three compensatory draft picks on Friday.

14 teams across the league were gifted with compensatory picks for next month’s draft. The Packers were one of six teams to receive three or more, along with the San Francisco 49ers (5), Los Angeles Rams (5), Philadelphia Eagles (4), New Orleans Saints (3) and New York Jets (3). While teams typically can’t receive more than four compensatory selections in a single year, the 49ers and Rams were exceptions because of the league’s minority hiring initiative.

Compensatory picks are determined by how many players a team loses to unrestricted free agency versus how many they acquire. The formula factors in salary, playing time and postseason awards. The Packers weren’t exactly big spenders in free agency last year, however, amid their well-documented youth movement, they allowed several experienced players to enter the free-agent market.

For the four-year, $44 million dollar contract Allen Lazard signed with the Jets, the Packers received an extra fifth-round pick (No. 168).  Jarran Reed, who re-signed with the Seattle Seahawks on a two-year deal worth $12.8 million, the Packers gained a sixth-round pick (No. 219). After seven seasons with the Packers, Dean Lowry continued his career elsewhere, signing with the Minnesota Vikings on an $8.5 million dollar deal for two years.

The sudden influx of picks is music to Gutekunst’s ears as he continues to reshape the Packers’ roster following last year’s exodus. Aside from the aforementioned names, the Packers also moved on from Randall Cobb, Robert Tonyan, Marcedes Lewis, Adrian Amos and Mason Crosby. That doesn’t include the team’s decision to trade longtime quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the Jets. For the third consecutive year, Gutekunst’s draft class will likely exceed double digits.
