It’s common knowledge that the Atlanta Falcons are actively seeking a quarterback this offseason. The specific target remains uncertain, but both Raheem Morris and Terry Fontenot have acknowledged multiple contingency plans for the upcoming months. While there’s a preference, Steve Wyche and Daniel Jeremiah have suggested that Fontenot may pursue an aggressive strategy in trading up the draft board. Despite speculation, it’s clear that Justin Fields and Kirk Cousins aren’t the primary options for the Falcons.
According to recent interviews, the organization is intent on finding a quarterback for the long term, akin to a new “Matt Ryan” to anchor the team for the next decade. However, circumstances might not align with their preferences, especially if the top three quarterback prospects are taken early in the draft.
In such a scenario, the Falcons’ choices are constrained to drafting J.J. McCarthy, Bo Nix, or Michael Penix, trading for Justin Fields, or signing a veteran free agent like Kirk Cousins, Baker Mayfield, or Russell Wilson. Each option brings its own strengths and weaknesses, and the final decision will significantly impact the expectations of Arthur Blank, the Falcons organization, and their fans for the upcoming seasons.
For instance, signing Kirk Cousins in free agency would raise expectations considerably, possibly positioning the Falcons as contenders for the division title in 2024. Similarly, acquiring Baker Mayfield could lead to high expectations, while Russell Wilson might make the team competitive without necessarily making them favorites to win the NFC South.
On the flip side, young quarterbacks like Justin Fields or any incoming rookies should temper immediate expectations. While they may represent long-term solutions, success might not be immediate. The Falcons appear open to various quarterback options, each carrying its own set of skills and accompanying expectations.
