Green Bay Packers Avoid Certain Factors When Contemplating new Quarterback Draft Selections.

Green Bay Packers are deliberate in avoiding certain considerations when evaluating potential quarterback draft selections. Unlike some teams, they haven’t relied on bringing in random mentors for rookies. Instead, they have historically relied on all-time greats like Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, who were determined to maintain their starting roles without grooming successors. In fact, the Packers retained both players until they were nearly 40 years old, a testament to their unique approach. The Patriots, on the other hand, face a different situation, as whoever they draft will inevitably succeed Mac Jones, and there’s skepticism about Jones’ long-term potential. Unlike the Packers, the Patriots are among the many teams hoping to land a franchise quarterback without the risks associated with drafting players like Zach Wilson, JaMarcus Russell, or Mitch Trubisky.

Another commonly cited example is Patrick Mahomes, who initially served as a backup to Alex Smith in Kansas City after being drafted in 2017. However, it’s arguable whether Mahomes or the Chiefs truly benefitted from this arrangement. While Mahomes eventually became the starter and NFL MVP, the team’s success during his first year as a backup raises questions about the necessity of his “gap year.”

Ultimately, if a rookie quarterback is genuinely talented, they should be given the starting role without delay. Recent history shows that many successful quarterbacks, such as C.J. Stroud, Joe Burrow, Kyler Murray, Jameis Winston, Andrew Luck, Cam Newton, and Matthew Stafford, started in their rookie season and went on to achieve Pro Bowl status.
