The Packers Can’t Sign a Jordan Love Extension Until May.
The Packers are unable to finalize an extension for Jordan Love until May due to NFL regulations stipulating a 12-month waiting period for executing a second extension on the same contract. This rule prevents Love and the Packers from formalizing another extension until after May 3, 2024.
In May 2023, the Packers’ management opted for a one-year contract worth $13.5 million for Love, with potential incentives totaling up to $22.5 million, as reported by Spotrac. This decision was made instead of exercising the fifth-year option in his rookie contract, giving Love an opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities while providing the Packers with flexibility in case he didn’t establish himself as the long-term quarterback solution.
Fortunately, Love’s performance in the latter part of the 2023 season provided clarity for General Manager Gutekunst and the Packers. Love showcased promising statistics, including 4,159 passing yards, a 64.2% completion rate, and 32 touchdown passes with 11 interceptions, according to Pro Football Reference. Additionally, he contributed 247 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.
Entering the 2023 season, the Packers faced uncertainty at the quarterback position, but Love, aged 25, emerged as a cornerstone for the franchise’s future. Gutekunst expressed excitement about building around Love, acknowledging his strong performance in the latter half of the season.
With Love as their starting quarterback, the Packers finished the season with a 9-8 record, securing a playoff berth as the NFC’s seventh seed. Love’s achievement of guiding the franchise to the postseason in his debut season as a starter places him among the notable first-year starters in NFL history.
Love’s performance earned him recognition, with 32 touchdown passes ranking him behind only a select few in terms of first-year starter achievements. Pro Football Focus rated Love’s offensive performance highly, with an 83.6 grade, ranking him 11th among quarterbacks who played at least 50% of their team’s snaps.
Despite a loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round, Love’s contribution helped the Packers exceed expectations, especially with a notable victory over the Dallas Cowboys during Wildcard Weekend. Gutekunst emphasized Love’s potential for further growth, expressing excitement about his future development.
