Latest Packers update could spell bad news for free agents.
The most recent update on the Packers hints at potential setbacks for free agents. General manager Brian Gutekunst is anticipated to be somewhat active during the upcoming NFL free agency period, especially with Aaron Rodgers no longer on the payroll. This departure frees up some funds and allows for roster adjustments for the 2024 season. However, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, there’s a likelihood that several of Green Bay’s free agents won’t receive contract offers when the window opens. Among those possibly affected are former first-round safety Darnell Savage, former All-Pro kick returner Keisean Nixon, and former second-round pick running back A.J. Dillon.
Savage has displayed flashes of top-tier talent but has struggled with consistency and susceptibility to being outplayed. Nixon is versatile, capable of serving as a nickel corner and returner, but may be considered primarily as depth at cornerback, with doubts arising regarding the sustainability of his exceptional return seasons. As for Dillon, despite significant investment by the Packers, he has yet to convincingly establish himself as a primary offensive weapon and seems destined for a backup role.
It’s plausible that all three could be replaced in the upcoming NFL Draft, potentially offering better value than re-signing them via free agency. Additionally, other free agents such as Jon Runyan, Yosh Nijman, Jonathan Owens, Rudy Ford, and Eric Wilson are also under consideration. Nijman, especially given the uncertainty at left tackle, and Wilson, who has excelled on special teams, might warrant retention.
However, with a wealth of draft picks at his disposal, Gutekunst may opt to replenish the roster through the draft rather than relying heavily on free agency.
