A football player from Alabama State University found himself in legal trouble and suspended from the team after an altercation during Saturday’s game against Florida A&M University. The player in question, Jacob Freeman, a junior wide receiver, was captured in a viral video slapping a security guard at the Tallahassee stadium.
Initially, Freeman was engaged in a heated exchange with fans from the opposing team. When a security guard attempted to intervene, Freeman refused to de-escalate the situation. Despite the guard’s efforts to push Freeman away from the agitated crowd, Freeman shockingly slapped him.
The incident led to a commotion, with Alabama State staff intervening to remove Freeman from the scene while other players were restrained from joining the altercation. The security guard, visibly in pain, continued to point out Freeman as the assailant while nursing his injured mouth and jaw.
Subsequently, Freeman was arrested by FAMU Police on Sunday and charged with ‘battery causing bodily harm.’ Alabama State University Athletic Director Dr. Jason Cable announced Freeman’s indefinite suspension from the team, emphasizing that such behavior does not align with the university’s values.
Head football coach Eddie Robinson Jr. addressed the incident, expressing disappointment and emphasizing accountability. He underscored the severity of Freeman’s actions, stating they reflect poorly on himself, the university, and the SWAC conference. Despite being remorseful, Freeman must face the consequences of his actions.
Freeman, who previously played for Georgia State, transferred to Alabama State University before the current season. The team’s loss against Florida A&M University further compounded the repercussions of Freeman’s behavior, leaving Alabama State with a 1-2 record for the season.
