In the previous offseason, the Atlanta Braves made a noteworthy move by acquiring catcher Sean Murphy in a three-team trade. Despite already having strong catchers in Travis d’Arnaud, an All-Star, and the emerging talent of Williams Contreras, Braves’ General Manager Alex Anthopoulos orchestrated the deal. The Braves traded Kyle Muller, Freddy Tarnok, Joey Estes, and Royber Salinas to the Athletics, along with sending William Contreras to the Brewers. The move was initially criticized for its high cost, but the subsequent signing of Sean Murphy to a six-year, $73 million extension garnered positive attention.

In retrospect, the Athletics seemed to have received less favorable returns. Kyle Muller struggled, Freddy Tarnok dealt with injuries, and Joey Estes faced difficulties after his promotion from AA. Although they acquired Esteury Ruiz from the Brewers, who showcased good contact skills and exceptional speed, he concluded the season with a negative WAR.

While the Braves did secure a top-tier catcher in Murphy, who is lauded for his unmatched defensive skills, the trade raised questions as they already had a quality catcher on the roster, not set for free agency until 2027. Surprisingly, the Brewers emerged as the winners, giving up only their 8th ranked prospect, Esteury Ruiz, to receive William Contreras, who led all catchers in fWAR the previous season. The Athletics, missing out on Contreras, now see him as the standout player in the trade, making the Brewers the unexpected beneficiaries of the deal.
