Last season, the Houston Texans enjoyed a successful run with rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, largely thanks to the emergence of veteran running back Devin Singletary as their primary rusher after Dameon Pierce’s injury. Singletary’s consistent performance endeared him to fans and played a crucial role in the team’s offense.
However, with Singletary now a free agent, speculation arises about the Texans’ plans. Pro Football Focus’ Brad Spielberger suggests the Texans might opt for a different strategy, identifying them as a potential landing spot for free agent Saquon Barkley.
Spielberger highlights Barkley’s agility and versatility in both rushing and receiving roles, proposing that his addition could diversify the Texans’ offensive playbook and alleviate pressure on Stroud. Despite Barkley’s recent stint with the New York Giants marked by challenges such as a struggling offensive line and inconsistent quarterback play, he remains a promising talent at just 25 years old.
Considering the Texans’ aspirations to contend with the AFC’s top teams in 2024, pursuing Barkley could be a strategic move. However, securing Barkley might require a multi-year contract, a rarity for free agent running backs. A potential three-year deal with incentives could be mutually beneficial, providing the Texans with a dynamic offensive weapon while offering Barkley the stability he seeks.
