Former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry is set to join the Miami Dolphins’ coaching staff.

Former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry is set to join the Miami Dolphins’ coaching staff under Anthony Weaver’s leadership. Barry, who will serve as the linebackers coach and run-game coordinator for the Dolphins, wasted no time finding a new NFL team following his departure from the Packers.

The move marks Weaver’s first addition to the Dolphins’ defensive coaching staff. Barry, aged 53, boasts a long coaching career in the NFL, beginning as the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive quality control coach in 2000. He later served as the linebackers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, earning a Super Bowl ring during his tenure. Prior to his stint with the Packers, Barry held the position of assistant head coach and linebackers coach for the Los Angeles Rams from 2017 to 2020.

Barry’s tenure with the Packers ended on January 24th, 2024, following concerns over the team’s rush defense, which ranked among the league’s worst in recent seasons.

Bringing in Barry, who has experience as a defensive coordinator, provides Weaver with a seasoned ally on the coaching staff. Additionally, Barry’s track record in developing players adds depth and expertise to the Dolphins’ linebacking corps.

However, Barry’s appointment suggests a change in direction for Anthony Campanile, who missed out on the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator position once again. Campanile will now seek opportunities elsewhere, potentially landing a linebackers coaching role with another team.

The hiring of Barry prompts questions about his ability to nurture young talents like Channing Tindall and others on the Dolphins roster. It also sparks discussions about potential linebacker prospects in free agency and the upcoming draft.

Overall, Barry’s addition to the Dolphins’ coaching staff signals a strategic move to bolster the team’s defensive capabilities and player development under Weaver’s leadership.
