Dodgers Minor League Free Agent Signs with Atlanta Braves.
A former standout closer known for his 100-mph fastball during the Houston Astros’ 2017 World Series triumph, Ken Giles recently inked a minor league deal with the Atlanta Braves after a stint with the Dodgers’ minor league system in 2023, where he struggled with a 9.50 earned run average in 21 games.
Giles, who faced setbacks due to injuries after being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2018, endured Tommy John surgery, missing substantial portions of the 2020 and 2021 seasons, before making a brief return with the Seattle Mariners in 2022, appearing in just five games. Despite his recent challenges, Giles boasts a career tally of 115 saves and a 2.71 ERA over eight seasons in the majors, highlighted by his early success with the Philadelphia Phillies from 2014 to 2015.
His signing with the Braves, as reported by Jon Heyman, comes with a minor league contract and a potential $1.75M if he secures a spot on the major league roster. The move signals a calculated risk by the Braves, who already boast a formidable bullpen led by closer Raisel Iglesias. Should Giles regain some velocity on his fastball, he could become a valuable asset to the Braves, who aim to maintain their dominance in the NL East with six consecutive titles.
