Former Green Bay Packers defensive line coach, Jerry Montgomery, is expected to step into the role of defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots following the recent promotion of DeMarcus Covington. Covington, who previously served as the defensive line coach, has been elevated to the position of defensive coordinator.
According to ESPN reports, Montgomery is set to join the coaching staff under the Patriots’ new head coach, Jerod Mayo. Although the official title for Montgomery is yet to be confirmed, it is widely speculated that he will assume the responsibilities left by Covington and become the team’s next defensive line coach.
During his nine-season tenure in Green Bay, Montgomery worked under the guidance of coaches Mike McCarthy and Matt LaFleur. From 2015 to 2017, he served as the team’s defensive front assistant. Despite receiving an offer from Texas A&M in 2018 for the roles of defensive line coach and associate head coach, Montgomery chose to remain with the Packers as the running game coordinator and defensive line coach.
Montgomery, a former defensive tackle with the New Orleans Saints, initiated his coaching career in college. His coaching journey includes positions with Northern Iowa, Wyoming, Indiana, Michigan, and Oklahoma before joining the professional ranks with the Packers in 2015.
Joining a Patriots defensive staff currently undergoing changes, Montgomery will work alongside Mayo and Covington. Recent reports also indicate that Steve Belichick, the former outside linebackers coach, has accepted the role of defensive coordinator at the University of Washington.
Despite the Patriots’ challenging 4-13 record in 2023, their defense stood out, ranking fourth in run defense and seventh in overall defense in the NFL. The team allowed just 93.2 running yards per game and 3.3 yards per rush, showcasing a strong defensive performance throughout the season.
