The Detroit Tigers have made significant roster moves as they prepare for the upcoming season, including the designation for assignment of infielder Nick Maton and the acquisition of left-handed reliever Kolton Ingram from the Los Angeles Angels.

Maton, a 26-year-old infielder who primarily played third base at the start of the previous season, finds himself designated for assignment by the Tigers. This move comes less than two weeks before the team’s first full-squad workout in spring training, indicating the Tigers’ intention to make adjustments to their roster.

Ingram, 27, joins the Tigers after being claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. Despite his limited experience, having pitched in just five games for the Angels last season, Ingram brings left-handed depth to the Tigers’ bullpen. His performance in those outings yielded an 8.44 ERA with five walks and seven strikeouts over 5⅓ innings. Notably, Ingram had previously been selected by the Tigers in the 39th round of the 2019 draft before being released by the team in July 2020.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch expressed his readiness for flexibility at third base in the upcoming season, signaling potential changes in the team’s defensive strategies and player placements.

The move involving Maton underscores the Tigers’ commitment to optimizing their roster composition and addressing specific needs, such as bolstering their bullpen with left-handed pitching options. While Maton’s role with the Tigers may have shifted, the team’s decision reflects a strategic approach to refining their lineup for improved performance in the upcoming season.

Ingram’s addition to the Tigers’ roster presents an opportunity for the team to evaluate and potentially harness his pitching abilities in the competitive landscape of Major League Baseball. As the Tigers gear up for the challenges ahead, these roster adjustments signify their proactive stance in shaping a competitive team capable of contending in the league.
