With just $8 million available in free agency, the Packers will likely want to clear some space not only for future free agent signings, but to keep their current players on the roster as well.

Ken Ingalls outlined the moves Green Bay should make in the coming weeks, including a “goodbye” category. David Bakhtiari and De’Vondre Campbell were two of those names.

In his first year with Green Bay, Campbell became an All-Pro at insie linebacker. Campbell has contributed significantly during his tenure with the Packers, but injuries have led to a decline in his play and/or production in recent years. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Packers move on from Campbell this off-season.

How Would This Save The Packers $27 Million?

According to current projections, De’Vondre Campbell will have a cap hit of $14.407 million in 2024. Dead money will amount to $11.628 million if he is released.

Financial considerations go beyond cutting a relatively important player because of less than $3 million in savings.

However, if the Packers cut Campbell in 2024, they will also release $12.532 million in cap space the following two years. That’s a big difference.

That would be over $27 Million saved over the next three seasons.  If the Packers are comfortable with their future at the ILB position, this could be a no-brainer type of move.

The Green Bay Packers are certainly excited for their future after the 2023 season.  Much has been made about the Packers being the youngest team in recent memory to advance to the divisional round of the playoffs.  In what was supposed to be a rebuilding year, the Packers were three points away from reaching the conference championship.

Now the Packers have the task of building on what they have started.  That may include clearing some cap space to allow for free agency moves that could improve the longevity of this team. According to one report, the Packers could clear $27 million over the next three seasons with one move (that seems likely).
