Former Alabama Defensive Back Chooses Rival For Football Future.
Alabama redshirt freshman cornerback Antonio “Spoodie” Kite put his name into the transfer portal on Saturday just before the Alabama administration introduced new head coach Kalen DeBoer to the public.
On Wednesday evening the Auburn Tigers football program announced on social media that Kite had transferred into the program.
Kite, a former 4-star recruit out of Anniston, Ala in the class of 2022 played in nine games across two seasons for the Crimson Tide. He recorded just one tackle while working as a special teamer and as a backup defensive back.
The 6-foot-1, 182-pound athlete was a talented basketball player in high school but settled on playing football at the collegiate level. He chose Alabama over South Carolina, Tennessee and UCF.
Craig Stevenson of AL.com notes Kite is just the second Alabama scholarship football player to transfer from Tuscaloosa to Auburn, joining Corey Grant who pulled the feat in 2011.
Grant went on to rush for 1040 yards and nine touchdowns over three seasons for Auburn.
Kite is one of 26 players to hit the transfer portal during the off-season cycle and one of seven defensive backs to utilize the portal. The Crimson Tide is notably losing players from this position due to Saban’s retirement and his close personal relationship with the secondary along with secondary coach Travaris Robinson’s departure.
Kite will have three seasons of eligibility remaining in college football and is scheduled to make his return to Tuscaloosa this upcoming November for the 2024 Iron Bowl.
Alabama’s DeVonta Smith, Malachi Moore, Brayson Hubbard, Jahlil Hurley, Tony Mitchell remain on the roster while Domani Jackson joins the group out of the transfer portal and the Class of 2024 consists of numerous defensive backs.
