Tomlin just finished his 17th season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. This is the first time he has not been extended with at least two years left on his contract. In an article from Sports Illustrated, NFL insider Mike Florio from NBC Sports said he will make a decision about his future when the season is over.

“This year is a unique position for Mike Tomlin for the first time ever, he’s entering the last year of his contract,” Florio said. “I’m told he’s going to step back after the season ends, make a decision about his future with his family. He loves the team, the loves the young players there, but after the season, he’ll huddle with his family and make a decision about the Steelers.”

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has been a perennial winner

Buffalo Bills vs. Pittsburgh: Final score prediction for Week 1 matchup

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has been a perennial winner. In his 17 years as the coach of the Steelers, Tomlin’s teams have never suffered a losing season.

The only coaches in the history of the NFL that have gone this many seasons without being under .500 are Dallas Cowboys legend Tom Landry, and recently fired New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. Landry holds the record with 21 straight winning seasons, while Belichick is second with 19.

Tomlin is currently the longest-tenured active head coach despite being just 51-years-old. Tomlin now has a few options regarding his future with the Steelers, assuming he is not let go.

Tomlin can sign a new contract with the Steelers and stay with them, or he can sign a new contract with the hopes that another team would try to acquire his contractual rights. He can also resign and sit out a year to see if another team wants to acquire his rights. Lastly, he can finish out his contract without re-signing and become a free agent.

Many Pittsburgh Steelers fans want Mike Tomlin gone

Despite being one of the winningest head coaches in NFL history, many Steelers fans want to see Tomlin leave. His seat as a head coach has never been this hot.

The main reason Steelers fans want Tomlin gone is because of his failure to win big playoff games in recent years. Tomlin won Super Bowl XLIII against the Arizona Cardinals, but hasn’t had a lot of playoff success since, despite reaching the playoffs many times.

Tomlin lost the Super Bowl against the Green Bay Packers in 2010, but since then he has only made it out of the divisional round once. He now has five wildcard losses since then as well.
