Done deal: Braves reportedly sign SS Jose Perdomo to a $5 million bonus….

Braves sign SS Jose Perdomo to $5 million bonus, per report.

The deal that has long been expected will be made official today, with Venezuelan shortstop prospect Jose Perdomo signing with the Atlanta Braves. Perdomo received a $5 million signing bonus, as reported by Baseball America’s Ben Badler, the largest bonus among the 2024 class and the largest in the club’s history. The Braves have not confirmed any signings yet. The Braves have frequently dipped into the Venezuelan market for their top talent, with Ronald Acuna Jr. being their most notable major leaguer. They have also given large bonuses to Kevin Maitan, Abrahan Gutierrez, Diego Benitez, Douglas Glod, and Luis Guanipa in recent classes.

Perdomo has been a highly anticipated signing for a couple of years now, and while a couple of players may have since passed him in prospect rankings there is still a high hope surrounding Perdomo. His development defensively as an amateur has been notable, with many scouts now believing he can stick at shortstop — an underrepresented position in the Braves shallow farm system. Perdomo’s carrying tool is his contact ability as he has gained praise and above-average-to-plus projected grades even as a teenager, and he has developed enough physicality to project to average power. He immediately joins a high tier of Braves prospects, as one of only a couple of position player prospects who have impact potential.

The path for recent signees has seen them debut in the Dominican Summer League, so it should be expected to see Perdomo play there this summer when it opens play in June. Perdomo is the Braves top international signing since Maitan in 2015 and will carry with him outsized expectations for a 16 year old.
