Williams Today

Former Packer Running Back Jamaal Williams found himself sneaking into the endzone for a “shady” TD Sunday. With a minute to go and close to the endzone, Williams abandoned victory formation and snuck in for a TD.

Here is the play.

The quick take is that had the Saints planned to keep trying to score, they should have tried to run a normal offensive play.

Fired Falcons Coach Arthur Smith left Sunday’s Falcons vs Saints game with some choice words for Saints Head Coach Dennis Allen. The speculation is rampant that it has to do with former Packer Running Back Jamaal Williams “breaking rank” on a “victory formation” to score his first TD on the year.

For lots of football fans that has been viewed as poor sportsmanship.

How else have things gone for the former Packer?

Jamaal Williams Still Continues to have a great NFL Career.

Why didn’t things work out for Jamaal Williams in Green Bay? Was it simply a “we like AJ Dillion better” scenario? Green Bay invested a 4th round pick in the 2017 NFL draft on the running back out of BYU. Williams was a good player for the Pack, rushing for 556 yards in his rookie season.

Ezoic

Williams, of course, had an awesome 17 touchdown season with the Detroit Lions in the 2022 NFL season. He was able to parlay that to a deal with the New Orleans Saints. As we discussed above that is what, possibly, led him to want to go for the sneaky TD.

Williams left a positive mark on the team during his tenure. Known for his infectious personality and hard-nosed playing style, Williams became a fan favorite. He quickly showcased his versatility as a reliable runner and a reliable pass-catcher out of the backfield. Williams’ dynamic presence on the field and charismatic off-field persona endeared him to Packers fans. Beyond statistics, his commitment to community outreach and engaging with supporters solidified his legacy. Though he has since moved on, Jamaal Williams remains a beloved figure in Packers history.

The Expendability of NFL Running Backs is “real”

The running back position is really devalued in the league.

That might not bode well for Aaron Jones and his future with the team. For Jones, and really any running back nearing 30 years of age, in the wild world of the NFL, running backs often face the cold reality of expendability. Teams, like quick-draw poker players, are hesitant to keep their chips on the same running back for too long. It’s a brutal truth – wear and tear, injuries, and salary cap juggling lead to a high turnover in the backfield. Running backs sprint into the fray, taking hits and dishing out punishment, but the shelf life is short. Teams are always eyeing the next big thing in the draft or scouring the market for fresh legs. In this fast-paced game, loyalty often takes a backseat to the pursuit of the next breakout star.

Could that be the move for the team in the 2024 NFL draft? For Jones, and the team, the focus is squarely set on Dallas and Wild Card weekend.
