One of biggest AFL names off-contract at the end of 2020 just signed a new deal with Geelong.
Geelong has locked away arguably its biggest name that was out of contract at the end of 2020, with star midfielder Mitch Duncan signing a long-term extension.
The Cats confirmed on Wednesday that Duncan had added another four years to his contract, which expires at the end of next year.
It means Duncan is now contracted to the Cats for another five years, tying him to the club until the end of 2024 and, essentially, making the 28-year-old a Cat for life.
Duncan was the second Cat to sign a new deal on Wednesday, with forward Gary Rohan signing until the end of 2021.
“The club is delighted to see Mitch commit to the club,” Geelong football boss Simon Lloyd said.
“
For ten seasons, Mitch has been a consistent member of our squad. He is a smart, trustworthy teammate as well as a talented player.
“Our supporters and members have enjoyed following Mitch’s career as it has developed, and we all hope it continues for the next five seasons.”
Duncan has frequently been the Cats’ second fiddle to players like Tim Kelly, Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood, and Gary Ablett in an all-star on-ball brigade.
However, Duncan has continued to make a name for himself in the AFL, winning plenty of uncontested possessions because to his outstanding kicking efficiency and workrate.
Duncan now has a contract that expires in 2020, joining a lengthy list of Cats.
As a result, Geelong will now focus on players like Brandan Parfitt, Quinton Narkle, and Jack Henry, each of whose contracts expire in 2019.
Tom Hawkins, an experienced player with a contract that expires in 2020, is anticipated to return, but intriguing choices will need to be made regarding Sam Menegola, Zach Tuohy, Nakia Cockatoo, and Rhys Stanley.
