According to MLB Network Insider, Shohei Ohtani and the Atlanta Braves are still engaged.
The day following Atlanta’s eye-opening trade with the Seattle Mariners, MLB Network Insider Jon Morosi went on set at the Winter Meetings to share that the Braves are still engaged with Shohei Ohtani’s camp.
“Clearly, Shohei Ohtani, the talk of these Winter Meetings, I was told in the last 24 hours that it’s increasingly possible that he will make his choice within the next week, and one team that I think we have not been giving enough attention to in all of this is the Atlanta Braves,” Morosi said on set outside of the MLB Media Workroom at the Winter Meetings.
“Shohei, in looking at his options, he has prioritized teams that have a chance to win sustainably,” Morosi added. “That’s why the Dodgers, we’ve talked about them so much.”
When looking at Atlanta’s future, all eight position players are signed through 2027. Very few teams in baseball could offer more sustainability than the Atlanta Braves.
“The one thing his resume does not include is playoff baseball in the Major Leagues. The Braves, I’m told have had some conversations with Ohtani’s camp and the Braves have not been eliminated from this conversation.”
Atlanta is expected to be a playoff team in the foreseeable future. Morosi added that he believes the Braves are firmly in the running for Ohtani and have just as good of a shot as signing him as any team outside of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
