DEAL: Atlanta Braves Signed Ex-Reliever…

Former Guardians Reliever Reynaldo López Signs With Atlanta Braves.

The 29-year-old did not allow a run in 12 appearances with Cleveland during the 2023 season.

On August 31st, the Cleveland Guardians ended up claiming three pitchers off of waivers from the Los Angeles Angels.

All of them were set to become unrestricted free agents this offseason.

Now, one of them has found a new home for the 2024 season.

Earlier today, the Atlanta Braves announced that they have signed former Guardians reliever Reynaldo López.

Per the team’s official press release, López has been signed to a three-year, $26 million contract, with a club option for the 2027 season worth $8 million.

In 12 appearances with the Guardians, the right-hander did not allow a single run in 11.0 innings of work. López went 1-0 for Cleveland with a .143 opposing batting average and 0.82 WHIP, while averaging 9.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

He ended the 2023 season with a career-best 12-game scoreless streak.

Sep 6, 2023; Cleveland, Ohio, USA; Cleveland Guardians pitcher Reynaldo Lopez throws a pitch during the seventh inning against the Minnesota Twins at Progressive Field.

For his entire 2023 season, López made a career-high 68 appearances across three Major League teams, recording career-highs of 32 holds and six saves, and averaging a career-best 11.32 strikeouts per nine innings.

After making a combined 97 starts in the previous seven seasons, 2023 was his first season during which he served strictly as a relief pitcher.

This transaction comes just three days after Cleveland traded reliever Enyel De Los Santos to the San Diego Padres for fellow reliever Scott Barlow.

With López going to Atlanta, the Guardians now have a vacancy in their bullpen that they will look to fill before the 2024 season gets underway.
