Steelers Fear Longer Injury for Minkah Fitzpatrick.
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers could be without their star safety for more than a week after suffering a hamstring injury in Week 8. According to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac, the Steelers fear Minkah Fitzpatrick will miss “much longer” thank Week 9 against the Titans as he recovers.
Without Fitzpatrick, the Steelers are turning to Damontae Kazee, Keanu Neal, Miles Killebrew and even Patrick Peterson to provide help at the safety position. Elijah Riley is available off the bench, and the team also signed Jalen Elliott to their practice squad, who could be elevated for a game.
“It’s hard,” defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said. “You’re not going to replicate that guy. He’s really good and he does a lot for us. We’ll do it by committee and hopefully get the committee in the right spots.”
The Steelers have already played without multiple starters this season, placing Diontae Johnson, Pat Freiermuth, Cam Heyward and Anthony McFarland on Injured Reserve. Johnson returned, and Heyward is nearing activation.
With two returning and Freiermuth and McFarland potentially coming back as well, the team would be down to four remaining short-term IR activations remaining.
Teams are only eligible to bring back eight players from short-term IR in a season.
For now, the Steelers are not placing Fitzpatrick on IR, but that could change if he’s set to miss at least four games.
